Lower School Physical Education

The physical education program is sequential in design, stressing fundamental body movements and wholesome group play to give each child the opportunity to grow physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Through active participation in movement activities, group work, dance, and games, students build physical skills and learn to work cooperatively, individually and in small groups. As students become more skilled and confident in fundamental body movements and cooperative groups, they learn various rhythm, foot and hand-eye coordination, and apparatus skills. They build upon the solid foundation in the early years to become more confident in strengthening their bodies in healthy ways.

Based on the recognition that children develop in different ways and at different times, the physical education program is varied so that children develop to their fullest capabilities. Aerobic activities develop stamina and awareness of the importance of life-long fitness. Greater dexterity and coordination are developed with more refined movement exercises, skill drills, and practice, working as a team for common goals. Good sportsmanship and team-building skills are emphasized as the students gain more experience both inside and outside of class in team sports, such as soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.
