Middle School Academics

Individual attention is at the core of the Middle School academic program. For this reason classes are small – fifteen students is the average size – and opportunities for students to meet individually with their teachers are built into the daily schedule.

In the broadest terms, student learning goals are defined and discussed in terms of the whole person. The following fundamental questions are revisited regularly; Are students developing as whole persons? Are they developing a broad range of interests and sympathies? Are they becoming respectful, compassionate individuals? Is our curriculum preparing our students to succeed in high school?

In more narrow academic terms, academic departments work as groups and, through their representatives, across the curriculum (both laditudinally and longitudinally) to articulate specific learning goals for particular grades and subjects. These discussions occur on an ongoing basis and are periodically formalized in writing, always in the context of the general principles outlined in the Mission Statement.
