MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Mission Statement of Laguna Blanca School places emphasis on making community service an integral part of School life. Our mission is to continue to involve students in many service-learning experiences. Community service teaches habits of mind and heart essential for full participation in a democratic society. Students experience the difference their commitment and efforts can make in the lives of others. They derive from their service projects a sense of accomplishment, independence, and personal responsibility that makes them more thoughtful and purposeful in all aspects of their lives.
Student Requirements
Students attending Laguna Blanca in grades five through eight will meet the graduation requirements if he or she completes at least sixteen documented hours, prorated over four years, of community service. Students who enter Laguna Blanca in the seventh grade are required to complete eight service hours. Students can complete their service hours by participating in service projects organized and administered through the advisory program. Students may also complete service work outside of school.
They must complete and return to Trish McHale a community service form which is signed by a parent to document their service hours. Forms are available on-line, in the front office, or from Ms. McHale.
Students are informed about up-coming events and projects at weekly assemblies, in the School's newspaper, and from the community service web site. There is also a community service bulletin board located near the front office.
Students who complete fifty service hours in a twelve-month period are eligible to be certified for a Presidential Volunteer Service Award. The program runs from April 15-April 15. Awards are distributed at the Presidential Volunteer Service Award assembly which is held in May.
If you have any questions or require assistance in selecting a community service project, please contact Trish McHale at 687.2461 x317 or tmchale@lagunablanca.org.
