Fourth Graders Roll Out the Red Carpet for Their Guests at Annual Citizenship Breakfast

The focus of this week in fourth grade was preparing for a Citizenship Breakfast. Working in small groups, the fourth grade students created posters based on the principles of good citizenship. They also made a star for each guest that was filled with adjectives to describe their role models. All week the students practiced reading their speeches, working on volume, pacing, eye contact, and vocal modulation. With each practice round, the students began to become more comfortable with the idea of public speaking. Students also practiced greeting their guests by role playing in the classroom.

As guests arrived on Friday for the event, the students greeted them and shared their posters and stars. Once the program began, each student masterfully introduced their guest and read his/her essay like a seasoned professional. "I was so proud to watch them execute their speeches with poise and confidence," beamed Fourth Grade Teacher Ms. Brown. "It was evident that they were proud of themselves. too!"

This year's keynote speaker, Waid Ibrahim, inspired students and their guests with his story about growing up in Ghana and coming to the United States on a soccer scholarship. Throughout his talk, he emphasized the significance of character above all else. "It was a perfect tie-in with our lessons on good citizenship," Ms. Brown adds.

To finish the morning, the students served their guests breakfast.
