LBS Sock Institute Teaches UCSB Classes This Week

This week, students from Laguna’s Homeless Outreach/Sock Institute were invited by Dr. Mimi Doohan (Doctors without Walls) to lead three 50-minute discussion sections within a UCSB seminar on Underserved Medicine. Several students also attended a lecture, "Working with the Chronically Unsheltered Homeless,” which was the prelude to the break-out discussions led by Dr. Mimi Doohan.

Laguna students were asked to reflect on their Poster presented at the International Street Medicine Conference in San Jose in October, to watch and consider multiple videos, and to read various articles including “The Teen Brain,” an article many have already read in Ms. McHale's Public Speaking class.

“The joy and wonder of the day is hard to capture,” says Sock Institute Leader Dr. Tidey. “This week, and during this past year, these students have been living and breathing true 21st-century project-based learning principles that educators all over the country love to talk about. The critical thinking. The writing. The public speaking. The collaboration. The analysis of multi-layers of puzzle pieces that need to be glued! The camaraderie and community building across the grade levels. The high level interaction with community leaders, community organizers, doctors, professors, graduate students, and this week—250 college students!”

Congratulations to all the members of the Sock Institute for your inspiring work!
