Senior Kylan Tyng Wins SBIFF 10-10-10 Filmmaking Competition

Kylan Tyng '16 won the high school filmmaking award for his feature, Lost and Found, in the prestigious 10-10-10 Student Filmmaking Competition at the 31st Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Saturday, February 13.

Kylan’s film was based on a screenplay written by San Marcos student Courtney Morse--winner of the high school screenwriter competition. Lost & Found won the crowd over with its tale about a family coping with their grandfather's encroaching dementia.

Many Laguna students and friends assisted Kylan with the production. Bea Tolan ’16 stars as Heather, and classmates Valeria Romo ’16, Theo Berriet ’16, Isaac Baron ’16, Max Mayrock ’16 and Joan Curran ’17 were among the crew along with thirty more Laguna students who were extras in the “party scenes.” The group had 8.5 days to film and produce the entire project.

The 10-10-10 (10 Days – 10 Crews – 10 Films) Student Screenwriting and Filmmaking Competition started in 2004 and is a highly successful educational program developed by SBIFF to bring together student screenwriters, student filmmakers and industry professionals in an effort to encourage and assist the next generation of filmmakers. Students are mentored over a period of two months then during the annual Film Festival, they produce 10 films over a period of 10 days and are judged on both Filmmaking and Screenwriting criteria. Since its inception, 10-10-10 has given a public forum to hundreds of student screenwriters and filmmakers and generated a wealth of original creative work.

CONGRATULATIONS, KYLAN!
