Eighth Grader Kiki Tolles Receives Honorable Mention at CA State Science Fair

Congratulations to Kiki Tolles '20 whose Science Fair project not only took gold in the Santa Barbara County fair, along with awards presented by the Natural History Museum and the SB Astronomical Unit, but went on to earn Honorable Mention at the State Science Fair.

Kiki's project tested whether blue-green algae could survive the atmospheric aspect (pressure and gas content) of a simulated Martian environment.
"I was inspired after our eighth grade Mission to Mars Project at the beginning of the year," Kiki explains.

After conducting her experiment, the survival of her algae proved that the microorganism is capable of thriving even in the harsh atmosphere of the Red Planet. This research helps to determine whether it is within the ability of humanity to terraform Mars.

"If we could grow microorganisms on the planet, then one day humans might live there as well. The idea is to terraform Mars so as to make it hospitable for human life, with the concept that Earth won't last forever," adds Kiki.
