Grade 9 Explores Santa Barbara and Strengthens Class Bonds

PHOTOS

On October 28, Ninth Grade students got to play tourists in their own town as the English teaching team led them on a whirlwind morning tour of Santa Barbara, followed by an afternoon of team-building on campus. The day focused on learning about the city’s rich history while strengthening the bonds within the Class of 2029, complete with an impromptu “wedding” rehearsal!

The adventure began with a trolley tour that wrapped up at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. After a brief history lesson in the Sunken Gardens, students explored the iconic Mural Room—home to thousands of weddings—and climbed the clocktower for stunning panoramic views. When they learned that Ms. Altamirano and Mr. Reisman '14 will tie the knot there in March (with Mr. Dorfman officiating!), the students sprang into action, staging an on-the-spot rehearsal with Dr. Tidey as the groom and classmates filling in as the wedding party.

“That was truly a sight to see,” said Oliver Archibald '29. “I think it was a sign of the happy life that Ms. A and Mr. Reisman are going to have together.”

Afterward, the group headed to the Public Market for lunch, enjoying a variety of tasty local bites, before returning to Laguna Blanca for an afternoon of reflection and connection. One powerful activity involved standing in a circle with a giant ball of yarn, passing it along while sharing words of appreciation. Thirty minutes later, every student was linked together in a vibrant web of connection.

“We weren’t just connected physically by that yarn,” said Angelina Arria '29. “We felt more connected as people and as a class, knowing how much appreciation there is among us.”

Huge thanks to Ms. Pepper for designing this memorable outing—one that's sure to become a beloved Ninth Grade tradition!
