Laguna Blanca Football Set to Open Season on Friday

BY BARRY PUNZAL, NOOZHAWK SPORTS EDITOR

Laguna Blanca coach Shane Lopes likes the character of his eight-man football team as it enters Friday's season opener at Coast Union.
“These players have great character on and off the field,” he said. “They are committed to putting in the necessary work to improve and are supportive of their teammates.”

The Owls, who went 3-4 last season, will be led by senior guard/linebacker Vincent Vestergaard.

He is the strongest player on the team and carries the nickname “Thor.”

Brian McClintock '20 and Christian Branch '20 can both play quarterback and running back. They have a talented receiving target in freshman Lachlan MacFarland.

Francisco Baron is another freshman who is expected to make a big impact. Lopes says he is a naturally gifted runner.

Lopes, who is in his eighth year coaching football at Laguna, says his players work well together and have a good attitude.

Lopes has knack of building teams with low numbers and limited experience into solid, cohesive units. Two years ago, he took Laguna to the CIF-SS Finals.

The Owls will play their first home game on Sept. 13 against Villanova.
