Ninth Grade Explores Downtown LA As Part of Place-Based Interdisciplinary Unit

As a culmination of Ms. Tidey and Ms. Whalen's Grade 9 Downtown LA interdisciplinary unit, ninth graders traveled to DTLA on Thursday, February 6 for an all-day immersive experience that allowed students to explore a complex and ever-changing city in a small square footage. Drawing on work in Biology, World Civilizations, and English, the unit serves as a collaborative warm-up for the upcoming Urban Studies Trip to London.

As the ninth graders begin their journey into our Urban Studies units, place-based experiences will guide their understanding of the larger world around them. A place known for its entertainment (Disney Concert Hall and MOCA) and food (Grand Central Market), LA is a melting pot of cultures, innovators, arts, and business. It is a prime location for observing the juxtaposition between old and new developments. Through collaborative ethnography and observations, students were asked to think about what it means to walk, talk, look, and listen in a big city, and to grapple with big real-world questions. Dr. Donelan’s Humanities class of ten students—who participated in this unit last year— also joined the group as participants and peer mentors.
