Blake's work as Upper School Dean of Students is centered around incorporating the school's core values of Scholarship, Balance, Community, and Character into everyday student life at Laguna.
A proud Laguna alum and recipient of our 2019 Faculty Excellence Award, Blake has taught a wide array of courses in his years at the school, including English, Geography, Digital Arts, and Critical Thinking. As advisor to our award-winning yearbook, La Honda, Blake helps his staff see the importance of documenting the school's history with creativity and accuracy in mind. He co-developed the school's longstanding Entrepreneurship curriculum along with Paul Chiment, and taught it for many years at the Middle School before moving to the Upper School course.
A former sports writer and broadcaster, Blake remains an avid fan of USC and Raiders football, as well as Dodgers baseball. He loves coaching our Middle School volleyball teams, playing beach volleyball, and spending as much time in the ocean as possible.
He and his wife, Laura, love continuing to find new ways to enjoy Santa Barbara along with their two daughters, Emiko and Juni.

When Mayumi was studying Tibetan in Lhasa, she saw a shop sign that read, “Strange Magic Place.” She thought this sign could as easily describe much of the natural world and human endeavor as it did the souvenirs for sale in the shop. Discovering the depths of this world’s strangeness and magic has also motivated much of her formal study, which has led to her BA in English Literature from McGill University and her current PhD candidacy in Religious Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Mayumi was born and raised in Los Angeles but has lived in Japan, Mongolia, India, and Nepal. Before joining Laguna, she taught undergraduates at UCSB as well as grades 7-12 at Anacapa School. Prior to teaching, she worked as a writer, researcher, and arts administrator in the non-profit sector. She loves being in the classroom and aspires to inspire in her students the same curiosity about and careful inquiry into the world around them that she is grateful to have learned from her own teachers.
Maud Maillard was born in the Champagne region near Paris and raised in many different places in France including Provence, Alsace-Lorraine, and Brittany where different local languages were spoken. She also spent two years on the French Caribbean Island, Guadeloupe where she was exposed to Creole. Growing up with different languages inspired Maud to focus on learning three languages at school.
She studied business administration and foreign languages at the University of Haute-Alsace and received her Master's in International Business in 1991. Maud also took some courses in teaching and education, which led to her first job teaching English and German in a private middle school in Brittany. Even after shifting to the business field, Maud’s real passion was education and she was determined to get back into the classroom. She moved to the U.S. in 1999 and became a French-American citizen.
Maud ran the Laguna Blanca French program for 13 years and was simultaneously a French Lecturer at USCB where she passed her Excellence Review with High Honors in 2017. This same year, Maud, unfortunately, had to move to Boca Raton, Florida due to her husband’s work obligations. There she endorsed some new educational roles teaching English, Leadership, and Study Skills. After four years of Floridian experiences, she is thrilled to be back in beautiful Santa Barbara and the Laguna Blanca community for teaching seventh grade English and sixth grade French. She aspires to keep doing her best at being a creative and inspiring teacher. When asked what Maud enjoys most about working here at Laguna Blanca School, she said, “I consider Laguna Blanca as my second family. My friends and colleagues, and of course the students, are incomparable here. I feel extremely lucky, and I am immensely grateful to be back at Laguna.”

Many Laguna families knew Ashley Tidey as a wonderfully capable and personable independent tutor of writing, reading, and test preparation for Grade 7-12 students here in the Santa Barbara area, but what they didn't know is that before starting a family, she served as a lecturer within UCSB’s Writing Program for five years, and before that as an associate instructor of English at Indiana University. Ms. Tidey grew up in independent schools, her father having been the long-time Head of Sacramento Country Day, and she went on to earn her B.A. at Williams College and her Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington, both in English.
