The three third grade LEGO@Laguna teams--the “Peregrine Falcons,” the “Butterfly Bunch,” and the "Tweeters"--traveled to LEGOLAND on Sunday, February 5 to participate in the Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League EXPO! Each team worked hard during their after school club to create a model and display board for the Expo.
The event's theme this season was
Creature Craze. While exploring the real-world theme, teams used basic engineering concepts to build a model made entirely of LEGO® elements. They learned to present information through a Show Me Poster. Throughout their experience, students operated under the FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and gracious professionalism.
The teams were challenged with choosing an animal that shares a habitat with the honey bee. The Peregrine Falcons team members picked a Peregrine Falcon as their creature, the Tweeters decided upon a blue bird, and the Butterfly Bunch team members chose a butterfly as their animal.
The FIRST LEGO League Team experience is divided into three sections: explore, create and share.
EXPLORE
Choose an animal that lives within the same habitat as a honey bee, using their Inspire Set featuring Aliza the honey bee for inspiration. Learn about the animal and its habitat.
CREATE
Build a LEGO® model that shows their selected animal and the honey bee. The model helps the team show what they learned about their animal. They learn basic programming and design skills using LEGO Education WeDo to make their model move. Create a Show Me poster to teach others about their team and what they learned.
SHARE
Share what they have learned by participating in an Expo.
The LEGO@Laguna teams enjoyed the big LEGOLAND adventure. They met with reviewers who evaluated their LEGO model, viewed models made by other Southern California teams, and participated in a High Five ceremony. After the ceremony, the team members also got to enjoy LEGOLAND!
