CIF-SS Boys Volleyball Playoffs: Lancers too much for Owls

BY DENNIS MORAN, SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS

Laguna Blanca gave a spirited fight against top-ranked La Salle before going down in defeat in a second-round CIF-Southern Section Division 4 volleyball match at home.

The Lancers prevailed 25-23, 25-21, 25-19, in front of a couple dozen fans from Pasadena to cheer them on, showing a little more possession savvy on points when it counted among the long, late points of the sets.

"I'm very proud of the way we played, in the sense that we fought real hard," said Owls coach Jon Roberts.

"We weren't very sharp in some areas — ball control, you could see the difference between that team and this team. They were a little sharper with ball control, but we played hard. Sometimes that's satisfying, even though we lost, because we went down swinging."

The Owls finish their season at 8-10 overall, and the Lancers move on at 23-6.

The Owls struck early in the first game, taking the first three points and heading to a 10-5 lead with the help of kills by Spencer Rycroft '18, Andrew Tolles '19 and Miles McGovern '18.

The Lancers then went on a 9-1 run to take a 14-11 lead, including four kills from CJ Rettig. The Owls tied the game at 19 and again at 20 on a kill by Finn Walker '21.

Down 24-21, Laguna won the next two points, on a kill by Tolles and a netted shot from La Salle. Lancer Will Dalgarn ended the Owl rally with a kill to take the set.

In the second game the Owls trailed early, but down 15-10 they mounted a run to take the lead at 17-16. Tied at 19, the Lancers pulled off four straight points to go up 23-19, and hung on for the win.

The Lancers established the lead early in the last set, expanding it to the widest margin of the match at 23-15. To the end, the Owls dove and dug to contest every point.

"We never surrendered," Roberts said. "We never lost our will to win. I was very proud of that."

The Owls were led by outside hitter Tolles with 10 kills, middle Rycroft with nine, Walker with five and McGovern with four.

La Salle was led by Rettig with 15 kills and 17 digs, followed by Dalgarn with 11 kills and 13 digs. Libero Brandon King had 20 digs.
