NAME: Courtney Debrouwer
POSITION AT LAGUNA: Spanish and English Teacher
What is the first thing you do in the morning?Take my sweet dog (and best friend) JJ for a walk while listening to music or a podcast.
What is your go-to song of the moment?God like you by Kirk Franklin. Helps me get pumped for the day!
What is something that most people don’t know about you?I won a hula hoop contest in the 3rd grade!
And I love the crisp sound you hear when your foot delightfully lands on a perfectly crunchy leaf (Did I just write poetry?) but I despise the sound of typing (perfect for a 21st century teacher, eh?) You'll find that I have strong feelings about many different sounds!
Describe Laguna in three words.Innovative. Collaborative. Welcoming.
In your opinion, what is the greatest invention of all time? Is it cliché as an English teacher to say the printing press? Wait no, straws that bend.
Who is your hero?My Mom and Dad. Both of them have had to overcome unique obstacles but always rose above and are the most incredible role models.
What or who makes you laugh the most?My twin sister. She is hilarious and full of wit and just so happens to have the same sense of humor as me (go figure!).
Have you ever had a nickname? What is it?I have a few! My younger cousin couldn't say Courtney so she called me “Coco” and it stuck. In high school (and subsequently college) my nickname was “C-money.” Also, when I was younger, I requested that everyone call me by my middle name "Katelyn" and sometimes my family calls me "Courty-Kate" or "Katey-lynn"
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?Part of my family is from a small town in Northern Italy called, “Verres.” Its a wonderfully charming town, rich with our family’s history. We had plans to visit this summer but then, COVID happened. Alas, one day!
What is your proudest accomplishment?Solo-traveling to Guatemala for 6 months to attend a language immersion school and do volunteer work. It was such a challenging but formative experience and in a bit of a roundabout way, led me to ultimately pursue teaching!
