Laguna Sophomore Miles Sedlin Launches 805 Homeless Helpers Initiative

Fred Rogers once said that we should look for the helpers. In our community, we don't have to look very far to find those who are joining together to support our most vulnerable and in-need populations.

Introducing...the new 805 Homeless Helpers Initiative, created by Laguna's own tenth grade student Miles Sedlin ’22 and his brother, Asher. The organization was born out of the recognition of the added challenges the homeless population in our community is facing during the COVID-19 pandemic. This youth-led effort is dedicated to bolstering assistance for the many who experience homelessness on the Central Coast.

Miles and Asher teamed up with their local synagogue, Congregation B'nai B'nith, after learning their members were distributing supplies and food to the homeless in Pershing Park each Wednesday. For the past few months, the brothers have raised money for food as well as supplied material donations. "It is a perfect relationship because we are the suppliers and they are the distributors," says Miles.

So far, the organization has raised over 300 meals for the homeless and donated thousands of articles of clothing, suitcases, blankets, sleeping bags, and equipment. The duo is also adding more organizations to receive deliveries.

Another Laguna student, junior Devin Hernandez ’21, has supported this cause tremendously as well. “He has put in over 20 hours of community service and plans to continue helping the homeless,” Miles says.

Looking ahead, the team hopes to expand their organization by adding additional drivers and sorters, as well as securing more community partnerships.

"The most meaningful part about creating this organization is how many lives we affect. It gives me a sense of joy after I drop off a truckful of supplies," says Miles. "At first, this organization was just a thought, but it turned into something so much bigger."
